The Greenbucker

from £85.00

This Humbucker possesses a PAF-like character, with a resistance of 7.5k in the neck and 8.5k in the bridge (+/- 5%). In the past, these pickups were crafted using whatever grade of Alnico was available at the time, often opting for the most cost-effective option. Now, you have the choice between Alnico II and Alnico V.

The Alnico II version delivers a warm and articulate tone that pairs well with high gain. If you're seeking a pickup that excels in blues rock and heavy rock, this is the one for you. However, it's worth noting that the weaker magnet and low resistance may sound slightly harsh when played through a completely clean amplifier.

On the other hand, the Alnico V version exhibits a slightly scooped mid-range, resulting in a brighter, snappier sound compared to the Alnico II. It still retains the airy PAF-like quality due to the low wind count, but the stronger magnet adds a touch of versatility. It's generally considered a more "modern" sound, despite its consistent use in Gibson T Tops from the late 60s/70s.

Original PAFs featured braided single conductor leads, and you have the option to choose between a braided or 4-conductor output cable. With the 4-conductor option, you gain access to series, parallel, and split coil wiring configurations, while the braided cable only provides a series output.

Unlike the original PAFs, both versions of this Humbucker are wax potted to minimise microphonics. However, if you desire an authentic vintage experience, complete with squeals and all, I recommend checking out the Green Vintage PAF.

Original humbuckers were machine wound, and the same approach is taken with these pickups to eliminate any scatter winding between the bobbins. While "hand-wound humbuckers" have gained popularity, it's important to note that for them to function effectively, the bobbins should have a symmetrical wind pattern (not necessarily the same number of turns). There's a reason why renowned pickup makers like Mr. Duncan and Mr. Lollar do not hand wind humbuckers!
